AbstractBackground

RheumaticHeartDisease(RHD)remainsamajorcauseofchildhoodacquiredheartdiseaseindevelopingcountries.Howeverreportedechocardiographicfeaturesarelimitedtoafewcountries.ThisreportisonthedemographicandechocardiographicfeaturesofRHDinchildrenusingdatafromthelargestreferralhospitalinYaounde,thecapitalcityofCameroon.

Methods

TheregisterofthecardiacultrasoundunitoftheYaoundeGeneralHospitalfortheperiod–servedasbasisfordatacollection.RHDdiagnosiswasbasedontheWorldHeartFederationCriteriaforthediagnosisofRHD.Demographicdata,patternofvalvelesionsandseveritywereanalyzed.

Results

Atotaloffirstechocardiographicexaminationswereperformedinchildrenaged?≤?18years.Sixty-five(5.8%)hadadefiniteechocardiographicdiagnosisofRHDwiththeirmeanagebeing11.8years(SD3.6)and31(47.1%)beingboys.The
